Calculate Carbon Emissions
Find out the amount of carbon emitted by a journey using the following map tool. Decide which mode of transport is used and then start clicking to plot the route.

How to use the Carbon Emissions Tool
First identify the mode of transport used.
Then click once on one point, then click again on the second point on the map. You can click more than two points in order to build up a continuous route. As your route is build up, an estimate for the total amount of carbon emitted will be displayed.
Assumptions in Calculation
There is conflicting evidence on the amount of carbon emissions for each mode of transport, therefore at some level assumptions have to be taken. At the current time there is merely a factor applied to the distance, the size of which is dependant on the mode of transport selected.
This factor is as follows:
- Boeing 747 : 0.11 kg CO2 per passenger per km
- Walking : 0 kg CO2 per km
As this tool is developed further, the number variables used per mode of transport will be increased.
Version History
- 26th September 2007 - Page Created
- 3rd April 2008 - Enable manual input of emission factor
Future Devolvement
- Add more modes of transport such as bus, train, car and then variations within each mode.
- Allow this tool to find the optimum mode of transport for a route you select. i.e. you click a route and this tool will say "the least emissions are via train" etc...
- Improve the calculations to find the most accurate emissions.
- Give feedback such as "This trip makes up 13% of the yearly recommended CO emissions"

good idea - this should now work

perhaps you could give an option for the user to enter their own emission factor? the data is quite widely available.

would love to learn what emissions would be made by a train
